British Columbia winter tire requirements begin October 1

Winter tire requirements have come into effect for most designated highways in British Columbia as of October 1. The mandate, which applies to most routes outside the Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island, remains in effect until either March 31 or April 30, 2027, depending on the specific route.

To comply with provincial law, tires must display either the three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol or the M+S designation on the sidewall. While all-weather tires may qualify if they carry these markings, the mountain and snowflake symbol indicates a tire tested to a specific severe-snow standard. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles are not exempt from these requirements.

Drivers must also ensure adequate tread depth; winter tires are considered legally worn out if the tread is less than 3.5 mm. Non-compliance can result in a $121 fine and two penalty points for driving without proper tires, or a $109 fine for driving with insufficient tread depth. Police also have the authority to turn vehicles around at checkpoints until they comply.
