British couple achieves early retirement through extreme frugality
A British couple, Katie and Alan Donegan, successfully achieved early retirement at ages 35 and 40 by following the principles of the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement. Their strategy involved extreme frugality and disciplined saving over several years.
To maximize the gap between their income and expenses, the couple implemented radical cost-cutting measures, such as not using home heating during the winter and relying on extra clothing and hot water bottles to stay warm. Additionally, they avoided eating out, opting to prepare all meals at home. Alan estimates that preparing lunches at home saved them approximately £40,000 over a decade. All savings were subsequently directed toward investments to secure their financial freedom.
