British entrepreneur launches ARK device to capture water from air for Ibiza

British climate‑technology entrepreneur Hashem Arouzi, whose Ibiza properties have suffered from drying wells, presented the ARK device in Barcelona on 30 July. The off‑grid water‑generation system uses metal‑organic frameworks (MOFs) to extract up to 500 litres of potable water per day from ambient air, even in hot, dry conditions. Arouzi says the technology could supply villas and hotels on the Balearic and Mediterranean islands that are not connected to public water networks, addressing a growing water‑stress problem affecting thousands of properties.

The MOF material, recognised by the 2025 Nobel Chemistry Prize, was developed by researchers Susumu Kitagawa (Kyoto University, Japan), Richard Robson (University of Melbourne, Australia) and Omar M. Yaghi (University of California, Berkeley, United States). Arouzi’s climate‑tech company Ahbstra plans to market the ARK device as a ready‑to‑use solution for regions facing chronic water scarcity.
