British expands presence in the Malvinas with satellite hub and naval drills

The British administration of the Malvinas announced a project to install a satellite data reception and processing centre near Pony's Pass Quarry. The facility, to be built by JETstreaM Ltd with backing from the Malvinas Development Corporation, will capture and process data from satellites over the South Atlantic, filling a gap in the global ground‑station network. Executives of the US firm MissionNEX, Nate Walbridge and Jill Arrasmith, are involved, and the node is described as a dual‑use platform that could serve commercial, scientific and strategic purposes, further cementing British control of the disputed territory.

At the same time, the United Kingdom conducted naval and air exercises in the South Atlantic from 26 to 29 July under Operation Southern Vigilance. The ocean patrol vessel HMS Medway (P223) and an RAF Airbus A400M Atlas performed live‑fire drills, a man‑over‑board exercise and logistical support tasks near the self‑declared Malvinas Conservation Zone. The operations aim to maintain a visible military presence and deterrence capability, following a recent incident in which HMS Medway was spotted by the Argentine navy and refuelled in Chile, raising diplomatic tension.
