British Gas survey identifies new signs of adulthood for 2026

A survey conducted by British Gas involving 2,000 adults suggests that the traditional markers of adulthood—such as marriage, parenthood, and homeownership—are being replaced by smaller, more manageable lifestyle habits in 2026.

As marriage and birth rates decline and homeownership becomes increasingly difficult for younger generations, new criteria for having one's life under control have emerged. Key indicators identified include financial responsibility, such as maintaining a healthy bank balance and building a three-month savings buffer, which 52% of respondents cited as a primary sign of success.

Other daily habits contributing to a sense of adulthood include making the bed every day, recycling, organizing clothing, and maintaining hydration by drinking two liters of water daily.
