British Heart Foundation to close 150 UK charity shops
The British Heart Foundation has announced plans to close approximately 150 charity shops across the United Kingdom to ensure its retail network remains “strong and sustainable.” The decision follows a reported net loss of £3.3 million from its network of 651 shops during the year ending March 2026.
Rising operating costs and shifting consumer shopping habits have contributed to the financial strain. Retail costs rose by 5% to £240 million, exceeding a 1.5% increase in turnover, which reached £236 million. The charity intends to close about 90 shops by March 2027, with the remaining closures scheduled by March 2028.
While the retail arm faces challenges, the organization reported a healthy overall financial position. It raised a record £62 million through fundraising and merchandise, and received £106 million through legacies. During the same period, the charity awarded £103 million in new research grants.
