Joshua Cammidge charged with assisting Russian intelligence in UK sabotage plot
Joshua Cammidge, a 31-year-old British man from Swindon, has been charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service and preparing for sabotage under the National Security Act 2023. Prosecutors allege that Cammidge was in contact with a representative of the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group the UK government designated as a national security threat in July due to its ties to Russian military intelligence.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Cammidge allegedly provided Google Maps screenshots identifying four drone manufacturing sites in Swindon and discussed plans to sabotage these facilities. The investigation also suggests he researched Wi-Fi jamming devices and conducted physical reconnaissance of the sites. Cammidge reportedly communicated with a suspected operative via Facebook and Telegram between late August and early September.
Cammidge appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where he did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on September 25. Under the National Security Act, individuals convicted of assisting such groups can face up to 14 years in prison.
