British man on trial for alleged murder of wife in Spain
A 73-year-old British man, identified under Spanish reporting restrictions as Michael John C, has gone on trial in Murcia, Spain, accused of the aggravated murder of his 57-year-old wife, Vanessa Elizabeth.
Prosecutors allege that following an argument after a day of drinking, the defendant used his physical advantage to strike the victim repeatedly in the face and body. The indictment claims he kicked her, jumped on her, and covered her mouth while compressing her chest, causing her to fall outside their property in Camposol.
The defense maintains that the death was a tragic accident. Counsel argues that the defendant, who had been drinking, may have accidentally struck his wife while reversing their vehicle after she stepped out to prevent their dogs from escaping. The defense is seeking a full acquittal, arguing there was no intention to kill, or alternatively, a charge of manslaughter.
