British monarchy under rising scrutiny over finances and future leadership

Former MP Norman Baker warned that the fallout from the Prince Andrew scandal has not yet peaked, saying “This may take quite a while, but the real damage to the monarchy has not yet happened.” He cited recent republican protests in Edinburgh targeting King Charles and the growing demand for transparency around the Sovereign Grant, which is set to rise to £100 million a year.

Royal historian Andrew Lownie questioned Prince William’s suitability as future king, describing the Prince of Wales as “very controlling” and urging greater openness in the management of the Duchy of Cornwall. Lownie argued that without reforms the monarchy’s reputation and public confidence will remain under pressure.
