British Museum porcelain artifacts damaged in display case

Two Qing Dynasty porcelain objects, a bowl and an accompanying box from the Sir Percival David collection, were damaged at the British Museum after reportedly falling from a display shelf on October 4. The artifacts, which date back to the Kangxi period, are currently undergoing restoration by the museum’s conservation team.

Museum staff noted that the display mount and shelf appeared undamaged, and no individuals were present in the room at the time of the incident. An investigation into the cause of the fall is ongoing. The damaged items are part of a highly valuable collection of approximately 1,700 pieces donated to the museum, valued at roughly £1 billion.

The incident has gained significant attention on Chinese social media following the circulation of photos showing the broken fragments. Some observers have used the event to renew discussions regarding the protection of fragile works and the broader debate over the return of cultural relics.
