British nationals killed or detained in Pakistan-administered Kashmir unrest

Two British nationals have been directly impacted by escalating violence and protests in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Mohammad Akhtar, a 50-year-old resident of Peterborough, was killed on June 9 in Kotli. His family reports that he was not participating in the demonstrations but was struck by a stray bullet during gunfire from Pakistani security forces near his home.

In a separate incident, 38-year-old Waqas Arif from Nottingham has been detained in a regional prison in Mirpur for over two months without charge. His family maintains that he was not involved in the June 5 protests, alleging he was taken by Pakistani forces and Rangers because his brothers were participating.

The unrest in the region stems from political tensions regarding legislative seats reserved for refugees. The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has expressed grave concern over the situation, as British citizens with familial ties to the area become casualties or detainees amidst the clashes.
