City of Dreams Mediterranean hotel sparks espionage fears near RAF Akrotiri

British intelligence and military officials have expressed concerns that the City of Dreams Mediterranean, a luxury resort in Cyprus, could serve as an observation post for foreign espionage.

The 16-story, Chinese-owned complex, operated by Melco Resorts & Entertainment, is located adjacent to the RAF Akrotiri military base. Due to its height and proximity to British sovereign territory, security officials fear that observers could use binoculars from high floors to monitor sensitive activities, including aircraft take-offs and landings.

RAF Akrotiri is a critical strategic hub for British operations in the Middle East and hosts advanced military assets, such as F-35 fighter jets and American U-2 Dragon Lady reconnaissance aircraft. The hotel operator has strictly denied all allegations of espionage, maintaining that the resort operates exclusively as a tourism and business destination.
