British pound weakens amid US economic strength and UK energy concerns

The British pound weakened against the US dollar and the euro on Wednesday, driven by a combination of strong US economic data and domestic fiscal concerns in the United Kingdom.

In the United States, the US dollar gained strength following the release of the core PCE price index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, which showed price growth remained steady. Additionally, US durable goods orders increased by 1.1% month-on-month, significantly exceeding the 0.5% growth anticipated by economists. These indicators have bolstered expectations for potential monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve.

In the United Kingdom, the pound faced downward pressure due to a 4% increase in the energy price cap, raising concerns about household finances and consumer spending. Furthermore, scrutiny is intensifying ahead of Chancellor John Healey’s upcoming autumn Budget, amid fears that inflation could rise through 2027. Investors remain cautious regarding how rising utility costs and fiscal policy might influence the Bank of England’s interest rate decisions.
