British pro surfer Arran Strong presumed dead after disappearance off Portugal

British professional surfer Arran Strong, 27, vanished on 27 July while paddle‑boarding near Arrifana on Portugal’s southwest coast. He was crossing from Monte Clérigo Beach to Carrapateira with his coach José Maria Pyrrait when the pair encountered difficulties in the Atlantic. A fishing boat rescued Pyrrait, but Strong was not seen. A four‑day, multi‑agency maritime search was conducted before the Portuguese National Maritime Authority called off operations on 30 July, declaring Strong presumed dead.

A public paddle‑out ceremony was held on 4 August at North Fistral in Newquay, England, to honor Strong’s life. Friends, fellow surfers and the local surf community gathered on the water, sharing memories and tributes for the athlete who had competed internationally for a decade and was highly regarded for his skill and personality.
