British Researchers Launch EASE‑CF Study on Overweight in Cystic Fibrosis

British scientists have initiated the EASE‑CF trial to assess the feasibility, acceptability and safety of a dietitian‑led weight‑loss program for adults with cystic fibrosis (CF). The study will monitor changes in body weight and composition, lung function, physical fitness, quality of life and metabolic parameters. Historically, CF care emphasized high‑calorie diets to prevent malnutrition, but recent data show that over 40% of UK adults with CF are overweight, rising to 54% in those over 50. The new protocol aims to address this shift by testing a structured weight‑reduction regimen while ensuring patient safety.

Results from the trial could inform future nutritional guidelines for the growing population of CF patients with excess weight, complementing advances in CFTR modulator therapies that have improved overall health but also contributed to weight gain.
