British Retailers face £440m surge in energy costs
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has warned that retailers face a £440 million increase in electricity costs this year, bringing total sector energy expenditures to an estimated £3.16 billion in 2024.
According to the BRC, the surge is primarily driven by government policy charges and regulatory levies rather than wholesale market prices. A major contributor is the Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) charges, which are projected to rise by 72%, adding £200 million to retailer bills. Other increasing costs include the Renewables Obligation and the Climate Change Levy.
BRC Chief Executive Helen Dickinson has called on Chancellor Rachel Reeves to intervene, suggesting that reducing these levies could help stabilize consumer prices. The BRC warns that these rising costs may be passed on to shoppers, potentially contributing to ongoing inflationary pressures.
