British Steel hires 70 apprentices and graduates across UK sites

British Steel announced that 70 new apprentices and graduates will start in September at its UK facilities. The intake includes 36 electrical, mechanical and structural apprentices at the Scunthorpe plant, 17 apprentices at the Teesside and Skinningrove sites, and one apprentice at the Sheffield R&D centre. Sixteen graduates will also join the company, the first cohort since 2022, taking roles in engineering, manufacturing, finance, IT and other functions.

More than 1,000 applications were received for the positions after the company relaunched its graduate recruitment programme. Training for Scunthorpe apprentices will be delivered by tutors from the CATCH training provider, while apprentices at Teesside and Skinningrove will study with TTE and Middlesbrough College Group before moving on‑site. British Steel, which was nationalised by the UK government in July, highlighted the recruitment as part of its commitment to rebuild the skilled workforce needed for the steel sector’s long‑term future. HR director Nick Ashton and Minister for Industry Blair McDougall both praised the high quality of applicants and the role the new hires will play in securing Britain’s industrial renewal.
