UK Cohort Study Links Persistent Financial Hardship to Faster Brain Aging
Researchers at University College London analyzed data from the 1946 British birth cohort (MRC National Survey of Health and Development), tracking 2,759 participants from birth to their early 80s. Participants classified as having persistent low income – defined as falling in the lowest 20 % of household earnings at least twice – represented about 16 % of the sample. Those experiencing chronic financial stress performed worse on cognitive tests at age 53, especially on verbal memory and processing‑speed tasks. Magnetic resonance imaging of a subset of participants aged 69–71 revealed reduced brain volume and enlarged ventricles, indicating accelerated brain aging. The associations were strongest in men and were amplified among individuals who had a disadvantaged childhood or carried the APOE‑ε4 genetic variant linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The study, published in the journal *Innovation in Aging*, suggests that prolonged economic hardship may increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia later in life.
