British surfer Arran Strong missing off Portugal's Algarve coast

British professional surfer Arran Strong, 28, disappeared while paddle‑boarding near Arrifana beach in the Algarve on 29 July 2026. He was undertaking a long‑distance stand‑up paddle trek between Monte Clérigo and Carrapateira when he and his companion, José Maria Pyrrait, stopped offshore to drink water and take photographs. After resuming, Pyrrait saw Strong’s board drifting about 100 metres away and could not locate the surfer in the deep, low‑visibility water.

The alarm was raised at approximately 11:30 a.m. by Pyrrait, who was rescued by a local fishing boat. Search efforts coordinated by the Portuguese Coast Guard, Maritime Police, the Lifeboat Station of Sagres, the Portuguese Air Force (including a helicopter) and volunteers such as a nearby fisherman, were launched. The operation was paused overnight due to fog and resumed on Wednesday with an expanded search perimeter of roughly one nautical mile (about two kilometres) to the south. Strong, who ranked sixth in the Portuguese surf league and 46th in the World Surf League qualifying series, has not been found, and officials consider the chances of his survival “practically nil”.
