British surfer Arran Strong presumed dead after search called off off Portugal

British professional surfer Arran Strong, 28, disappeared on Monday while paddle‑boarding off Arrifana beach in Portugal’s Aljezur region. He was attempting to cross from Monte Clérigo beach to Carrapateira with his coach José Maria Pyrrait when his board was seen drifting about 100 metres away. Pyrrait was rescued by a local fishing vessel, and the Portuguese maritime authority (Autoridade Marítima Nacional, AMN) launched a search using a boat’s sonar and spent roughly two and a half hours scanning the area.

The search continued for four days but failed to locate Strong. On Wednesday/Thursday the AMN announced the operation was being called off, and Strong is now presumed dead. He had competed in the World Surf League since 2016 and was the top‑ranked British male surfer at the 2024 and 2025 IS World Surf Games. GB Surfing posted a tribute describing him as a “fantastic teammate” and a devastating loss to the surfing community.
