British tourist Harry Kitto dies from peanut allergy in Argentina
An inquest has concluded that 24-year-old British tourist Harry Kitto died accidentally following an anaphylactic reaction in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Kitto, from Falmouth, Cornwall, was traveling through South America when he consumed churros at Cafe Tortoni that contained peanuts.
The court heard that Kitto had asked staff in both English and Spanish if the food contained nuts and was repeatedly reassured that it was safe. After consuming the pastry, he suffered a severe reaction, including swollen lips and breathing difficulties. Despite receiving an adrenaline auto-injector and being rushed to the hospital, Kitto died one week later from anaphylactic shock and a hypoxic brain injury.
Following the incident, Kitto’s family tested a sample of the food at a local laboratory, which confirmed the presence of peanut protein. Natasha’s Foundation, a charity dedicated to food allergy awareness, is working with the family to highlight the need for increased research and safety measures for those living with severe allergies.
