British Virgin Islands targets cruise growth as visitor numbers exceed one million
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) recorded 1,071,716 visitor arrivals between January and September 2026, marking the third consecutive year the territory has surpassed one million visitors. Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Luce Hodge-Smith confirmed that cruise passengers represent the largest share of these arrivals, noting growth in overnight guests despite a slight decline in day trippers.
To sustain this momentum, BVI officials recently attended the 32nd Annual Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Conference and Trade Show in Puerto Rico. A government delegation held discussions with major operators, including Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Princess Cruises, and Carnival Corporation, to discuss itinerary planning, port development, and infrastructure improvements.
The territory is currently finalizing a national tourism strategic plan and implementing the Virgin Islands National Tourism Policy for 2026–2036. Efforts are being directed toward enhancing the visitor experience by focusing on local culture, history, and food, while also seeking to encourage cruise passengers to extend their stays as overnight guests.
