British WWII love letter retrieved from Atlantic shipwreck
Marine archaeologists have recovered a love letter written in 1941 by British soldier Bill Walker to his fiancée Phyllis Ponting. The letter was found on the wreck of the cargo ship SS Gairsoppa, torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland during World War II. The wreck lies at nearly 5,000 metres depth in the Atlantic Ocean. Walker never received a reply before the ship sank, and Ponting spent eight decades without closure. The recovered correspondence confirms Walker’s affection and provides the centenarian Ponting with the emotional resolution she long awaited.
The discovery highlights advances in deep‑sea exploration and adds a personal dimension to the historical record of the war’s maritime losses.
