UK heatwave sleep hacks and cooling tips to beat nighttime heat

Britain is under a red‑warning heatwave, with many people struggling to sleep as night‑time temperatures soar. A range of low‑cost or DIY solutions have been shared online.

Dean Cooper demonstrated a fan‑and‑duvet “cocoon” that creates a circular breeze around the sleeper, calling it “air‑conditioning for people who don’t have air‑conditioning”. Mother of three Laura Stenton‑Slater freezes wet flannels and places them on bedsides to cool the body directly. Sleep experts recommend the “star” position – arms and legs stretched – to improve airflow around the body, and suggest chilled socks or refrigerated cotton socks for extra comfort. Portable options include Lidl’s sub‑£150 Tronic 3‑in‑1 portable air‑conditioner, while premium cooling mattresses such as the Bear Elite Hybrid use heat‑siphoning fibres.

Clinical psychologist Dr Tracy King adds that sleep quality also depends on bedroom cues, saying, “When the bedroom signals safety, the body lets go.” She advises keeping curtains closed from sunrise, using breathable linen or cotton bedding, and positioning the bed near a solid wall for a sense of security. Together, these tips aim to lower core temperature, reduce night‑time restlessness, and improve overall wellbeing during the heatwave.
