Brittany Ferries ends historic Poole to Cherbourg route

Brittany Ferries has discontinued its historic ferry route connecting Poole, UK, and Cherbourg, France, after more than 40 years of service. The final crossing occurred on October 19, 2026, three weeks earlier than originally scheduled.

The early closure was driven by several operational factors. The company noted that bookings on the Poole to Cherbourg route had already weakened. Additionally, technical issues with other vessels, including a gearbox failure on the Commodore Clipper, necessitated a reshuffling of the fleet. The vessel Barfleur, which has served the route since 1986, has been reassigned to the Rosslare to Cherbourg route.

CEO Christophe Mathieu stated that the Rosslare/Cherbourg route has become strategically significant post-Brexit, handling nearly 25 percent of the company's freight traffic. Brittany Ferries has offered affected passengers full refunds or alternative travel options via Portsmouth.
