Brittany Ferries ends transport of live Irish calves

Brittany Ferries has ceased the transport of live farm animals, including unweaned calves, as of September 1. The decision follows a campaign by various animal welfare NGOs to end long-distance live animal transport and ensure the enforcement of welfare legislation.

This move follows a similar decision by Stena Line, which will withdraw its Ireland to France service for such transport in October 2025. Brittany Ferries has confirmed that farmed animal transport will officially cease by September 1, 2026. This follows concerns regarding the welfare of calves under six weeks old during lengthy sea journeys between Ireland and France.

Animal welfare groups, including Ethical Farming Ireland, have called on the remaining operator, Irish Ferries, to stop carrying calves. They are also urging the Irish Government and the European Commission to enforce EU legislation regarding the treatment of animals on roll-on roll-off ferries.
