Brittany Higgins settlement ends Australian legal saga
The Australian federal government has reached a confidential settlement with Fiona Brown, former chief of staff to Senator Linda Reynolds, ending the final lawsuit linked to the Brittany Higgins case. Brown had sued the Commonwealth alleging she was barred from responding to accusations that she mishandled Higgins’ 2019 sexual‑assault claim against former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann and that senior officials, including former prime minister Scott Morrison, prevented her from defending herself.
The mediation‑led settlement, recorded in July, resolves the litigation that began in 2025 and avoids a Federal Court trial that could have placed Morrison under oath. Government spokespersons declined further comment citing privacy and legal privilege. The resolution closes the series of legal actions that have stemmed from the 2021 defamation finding that Lehrmann raped Higgins, a decision upheld by the High Court despite his denial of criminal guilt.
Separately, Higgins continues to advocate for reforms allowing sexual‑assault survivors to pre‑record evidence in court, arguing that current procedures cause unnecessary trauma.
