Brittany residents protest offshore wind farm projects

Residents, local officials, and various environmental associations in Morbihan, Brittany, are protesting a large-scale offshore wind farm project. The opposition has intensified following the launch of a public inquiry on August 17, which focuses on the location of onshore and submarine connections, as well as the placement of electrical substations for the ‘Bretagne Sud 2’ project.

The proposed development includes two main parks. The first, Pennavel, has a capacity of 250 MW and is located 19 kilometers west of Belle-Île-en-mer. The second project, Bretagne Sud 2, is expected to provide 500 MW of power and will be situated south of the island of Groix. RTE France plans to connect both parks to the national grid via a single offshore electrical substation.

Local groups, including Gardiens du Large and PIEBIEM, are actively contesting the project, citing environmental concerns and local identity. The public inquiry regarding the infrastructure layout is scheduled to run until September 28.
