Brittany’s Dinard Beach Sees Record Warm Sea Temperatures, Prompting Climate Concerns
In July, sea‑water temperatures along Brittany’s north‑western coast reached unprecedented levels. Measurements recorded 23 °C in the Gulf of Morbihan, 22 °C in the English Channel at Dinard, and 20 °C in the Iroise Sea – all far above typical summer readings for the region.
Bathers reported the water felt “deliciously warm,” extending their time in the sea. Scientists from IFREMER noted a steady rise in coastal temperatures over recent decades, with an average increase of about 0.7 °C per ten years, accelerating in recent years. The agency’s long‑term monitoring station highlighted the July spike as part of a broader warming trend linked to climate change, raising concerns among local residents and officials.
The unusually high temperatures are being watched as a possible indicator of broader oceanic warming, underscoring the need for continued climate observation and public awareness along the French Atlantic coast.
