Brixham Sardine Festival attracts thousands to celebrate British seafood

The second annual South West Sardine Festival drew more than 3,500 visitors to Brixham Harbour on August 9. The free event featured the grilling of over 10,000 sardines, which were served across 2,500 plates.

Organizers designed the festival to celebrate British seafood and promote sardines, noting they are often less popular among British consumers than fish like cod, salmon, or tuna. The event included a lineup of guest chefs, such as Matt Tebbutt and Mark Hix, and featured live music and street performers.

In addition to the culinary offerings, the Sardine Sessions brought together chefs, young fishermen, and representatives from the Marine Stewardship Council to discuss the future of the British seafood industry. The festival was a collaborative effort involving Rockfish, Sound Seafood, and the Brixham community.
