Brønnøysund maternity ward protests over birth service restrictions

Protests have erupted in Norway following the decision to stop accepting planned births at the Brønnøysund maternity ward. Since March 20, all expectant mothers in the area have been referred to Sandnessjøen, a journey involving approximately 80 to 90 kilometers and two ferry crossings.

Helgeland Hospital stated that the staffing situation has become so challenging that it is no longer professionally justifiable to plan births at the Brønnøysund facility. Despite recruitment efforts, the hospital maintains that staffing levels cannot meet international guidelines after the 12th week of pregnancy. Approximately 100 children are born annually in the South Helgeland region.

In response, local residents, pregnant women, and midwives have organized demonstrations. Midwives from Oslo, including former staff from the defunct ABC Birth Unit at Oslo University Hospital, have joined the movement to express concern over the centralization of Norwegian maternity care. Protesters argue that the long distances and reliance on ferries create significant risks for women in labor.
