Brno court acquits man accused of burning infant

A regional court in Brno has acquitted a man accused of burning a five-month-old infant on the soles of its feet. The court ruled that it could not be proven that the defendant caused the injuries, which appeared to be circular burns approximately one centimeter in diameter, resembling cigarette or cigar burns.

While the man was acquitted, the child's mother pleaded guilty to failure to provide assistance. She received a two-year suspended sentence and was ordered to undergo addiction treatment, maintain abstinence, and remain under probation officer supervision.

The incident occurred in the spring of 2024. The child was hospitalized after a relative discovered the untreated wounds. The court noted that the exact timing of the injuries could not be determined, and due to a complicated relationship involving drug use, it could not be confirmed whether other individuals were present in the residence at the time.
