Brno faces urban maintenance and greenery disputes

Residents and officials in Brno are facing local urban management challenges involving public infrastructure and greenery. In the city center at Moravian Square, a hollow, hundred-meter-long bench has become a source of hygiene concerns. Visitors report that people are using the structure as a trash bin, stuffing waste into the slats. This has led to the accumulation of dirt, bacteria, and mold, creating unpleasant odors. Maintenance crews can only clean the bench once a year by unscrewing it, a difficult and labor-intensive process.

Simultaneously, controversy has arisen regarding the planned removal of a thirty-year-old London plane tree on Slovákova Street. The tree is slated for cutting to accommodate sewage connection roots. Local residents have criticized the decision-making process, noting they were informed of the plan only after legal deadlines for appeals had passed. Experts from the National Heritage Institute noted that the tree is a rare example of its species used in a street lineup, and concerns have been raised regarding a nearby nest containing a young squirrel.
