Brno University of Technology completes Antarctic station module

The Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology (VUT) has completed a modular prototype for a new Antarctic research station, designed to be handed over to the Czech Antarctic Foundation Fund. The project, known as CZ*ECO Nelson, is a collaborative effort involving VUT, the Foundation, and the Czech Antarctic Research Program at Masaryk University.

Designed to withstand the extreme conditions of Nelson Island—including high humidity, intense UV radiation, and strong winds—the station utilizes a modular construction system. The interior consists of hundreds of precision-engineered cassette parts manufactured by a KUKA robotic arm. The design emphasizes energy efficiency, a low emission footprint, and the use of natural materials.

While the module will not be deployed directly to Antarctica, it serves as a functional facility in Brno to host events and showcase Czech polar research activities. The module was opened to the public for tours during the Science Night event.
