Broadcom to provide up to $42 billion in financing to Anthropic

As part of its preparations for an initial public offering (IPO), AI developer Anthropic has disclosed in its prospectus that Broadcom has agreed to provide up to $42 billion in financing. This funding is intended to support Anthropic's massive AI infrastructure expenditures, specifically covering approximately one-third of a $125.2 billion five-year commitment to lease Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) developed by Google and Broadcom.

The financing arrangement is expected to utilize convertible debt instruments, which could eventually be converted into Anthropic shares following the IPO. Broadcom also maintains the option to designate additional financing partners. While this provides critical capital for scaling, Anthropic's filing warns of “potential conflicts of interest” arising from Broadcom’s dual role as both a primary hardware supplier and a major financial backer.

Anthropic is projected to become Broadcom's largest compute customer by 2027. Meanwhile, market analysts suggest Anthropic's IPO could see a valuation between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion. Some reports indicate that a broader $60 billion debt arrangement is being organized by Wall Street banks to facilitate AI chip procurement for companies including Anthropic.
