Broads Authority faces rising costs from abandoned boat removals

The Broads Authority is facing an increasing financial and operational burden due to a rise in abandoned, sunken, and unserviceable boats within its waterways. Officials attribute the trend to high maintenance costs and cost-of-living pressures, noting that this is a broader issue seen across the UK.

Recovery operations are specialist tasks that can take months to plan and require significant funding. The authority spent £122,000 on recovery operations for the 2025/26 period. Peter Dixon, vice chairman of the navigation committee, warned that the issue is becoming an onus on the authority and tollpayers, suggesting the situation may worsen.

There has been a notable increase in enforcement actions; the number of notices issued to boat owners rose from 10 between January and March to 31 between March and August. The authority has indicated that toll fees may need to be increased if the costs associated with removing these vessels persist.
