Brocken mountain serves as a historic hiking destination in Harz National Park

The Brocken, standing at 1,141 meters, is the highest peak in northern Germany and a central destination within the Harz National Park. Historically, the mountain has served as a significant site for naturalists and poets, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Alexander von Humboldt, and Heinrich von Kleist.

Several hiking routes provide access to the summit, including the Goetheweg, which begins in Torfhaus and covers approximately nine kilometers. This classic route is considered relatively moderate for beginners, featuring mostly paved surfaces and a duration of about six hours. Other notable paths include the Eckerloch and Hirtenstieg.

Visitors to the park must adhere to a mandatory path requirement to protect the local environment. The region also features the Brockengarten, which houses over 1,500 alpine plants, and the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways, which operates one of Europe’s longest continuous steam-powered networks.
