Broeklin begins groundwork on former Uplace site in Machelen, slated to open 2028

Groundwork has started on the former Uplace site in Machelen as part of the Broeklin development. The contractor is preparing the ground, removing the topsoil layer and processing existing rubble, with work expected to finish by November. The municipality clarified that the work is not a soil remediation but preparatory for the next construction phase.

Broeklin plans to transform the long‑disputed site into a mixed‑use neighbourhood that will combine retail with offices, hospitality venues, a concert hall, a city farm and spaces for entrepreneurs. The opening is targeted for 2028. At the Captains of Retail event on 16 September, Bart Verhaeghe outlined the vision and strategy for the project to an audience of retail CEOs.
