Bromo Tengger Semeru forest fires claim four lives
Four individuals died while attempting to extinguish forest and land fires in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) in East Java. The fatalities, which occurred on October 15, 2026, include two TNBTS staff members and two volunteers. Two other responders sustained severe burns and are receiving intensive medical treatment.
Due to the ongoing fire, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority has implemented emergency restrictions on tourism. Access to the Penanjakan area, a popular site for sunrise viewing, has been limited to the Lemah Pasar area until further notice to minimize risk and facilitate firefighting efforts.
The fires have also caused infrastructure damage, including the destruction of four kilometers of water pipes serving approximately 7,700 residents in Jatiarjo Village. The East Java provincial government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased.
