Bronx Apartment Explosion Kills One, Injures Up to 15

A powerful explosion struck a five‑story apartment building at 374 East 209th Street in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx on August 5, 2026 around 12:30 p.m. The blast ignited a five‑alarm fire that engulfed the second and third floors. FDNY deployed roughly 270 firefighters and 84 units to the scene.

One man in his 40s was found dead inside the collapsed third floor, and two residents, including a 48‑year‑old woman, suffered critical injuries. Reports varied on the total injured, ranging from five to fifteen, with several firefighters also hurt. More than 40 residents were displaced, and the Red Cross provided temporary shelter for 45 people.
