Bronx begins construction on Tremont Avenue Busway

The New York City Department of Transportation has officially begun construction on the Tremont Avenue Busway in the Bronx. This mile-long, car-free lane is designed specifically for the Bx36 bus route, running from Third Avenue to Southern Boulevard.

Scheduled to begin operations on September 19, the busway aims to increase travel speeds by up to 60 percent. Currently, the Bx36 route can travel at speeds of less than five miles per hour during peak times. The project is expected to benefit approximately 39,000 daily riders by reducing commute times by up to six minutes per trip.

The busway will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will be enforced using stationary cameras, bus-mounted cameras, and NYPD personnel. While buses, large trucks, emergency vehicles, and Access-A-Ride vehicles are permitted, other vehicles like taxis are restricted to local access only. The initiative is part of a broader plan by Mayor Zohran Mamdani to improve bus speeds across 50 priority corridors to enhance safety and efficiency in transit-dependent neighborhoods.
