Bronx Dominican Parade Marred by Violence and Politician's Absence

The annual Gran Parada Dominicana in the Bronx, a major gathering that celebrates Dominican culture and identity, attracted tens of thousands of participants this year. Community leaders noted the event’s importance as a symbol of heritage.

Political candidate Darializa Ávila Chevalier, who won the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th district, did not join the parade, prompting disappointment among supporters who expected her to display the Dominican flag.

The celebration was also marked by unrest. Video footage showed fights among youths, damage to nearby vehicles and the seizure of a loaded assault rifle from 19‑year‑old Maleek Drakeford. Police arrested Drakeford and 16 others on weapons‑related charges, deploying over two thousand officers to control the scene.
