Bronx gunman in custody after double shooting and standoff
A gunman is in police custody following a double shooting and a subsequent standoff in a Bronx apartment building on Saturday night. According to the NYPD, the suspect opened fire in a hallway near the intersection of Mount Eden and Morris avenues in the Claremont neighborhood shortly before 9:30 p.m.
Two victims, a 70-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen and torso, respectively. Both were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
After firing multiple shots in the building's hallway, the suspect barricaded himself inside an apartment. NYPD officers established a perimeter and negotiated with the individual until he surrendered. The suspect was subsequently removed from the building on a gurney and taken into custody. Investigators are currently working to determine the suspect's identity, his motive, and whether he had any relationship with the victims.
