Bronx opens first busway on Tremont Avenue

New York City has completed the Bronx’s first busway on Tremont Avenue, a project designed to improve travel speeds and reliability for approximately 39,000 daily Bx36 riders. The corridor operates seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Under the new regulations, buses, emergency vehicles, Access-a-Ride units, and trucks with six or more wheels are permitted to travel through the corridor. Private vehicles, taxis, and for-hire transport are restricted to local access only and must exit at the first available right turn.

Prior to the implementation of the busway, buses on this route were reported to travel as slowly as 5 mph (8 km/h) due to traffic congestion. The new infrastructure aims to reduce transit times and provides critical connections to subway services and the Metro-North Railroad.
