Bronx: Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong fatally shot near school

Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian student, was fatally shot in the abdomen on Thursday, October 29, while walking to DreamYard Preparatory School in the Bronx, New York. The incident occurred near the intersection of East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighborhood shortly before 9:30 a. m. Frimpong, who had moved from Ghana to the United States approximately one year prior to live with his father, succumbed to his injuries at St. Barnabas Hospital.

The New York Police Department is searching for three teenage suspects, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, who were last seen wearing black clothing and blue surgical masks. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the victim running before collapsing.

Frimpong’s father, Thomas Frimpong, has alleged that the shooting may be linked to ongoing bullying at school. He stated that the school principal had recently informed him that two students were suspended following an altercation involving Javits. Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has called for an impartial investigation into whether racial bullying played a role in the circumstances surrounding the death.

In response to the tragedy, New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced that President Donald Trump has agreed to grant an immediate visa to the victim’s mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, to allow her to travel from Ghana to New York. The Government of Ghana has also pledged to fund her travel and work with U.S. authorities to pursue justice.
