On July 25, 2026, 12‑year‑old Jacob Freytes was fatally shot by stray gunfire outside the Wanda Deli Grocery on Elliott Place in the Mount Eden neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Freytes, the son of retired NYPD sergeant Jesus Freytes, was riding his bicycle when a brawl erupted in front of the store. Surveillance video captured him running back into the bodega clutching his chest before collapsing. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead.

Two other men, ages 25 and 34, were wounded in the same incident. The NYPD arrested 45‑year‑old William Ferrer on July 26 and charged him with second‑degree murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, assault and illegal weapon possession. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the arrest, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the shooting, calling it a “heinous act” and urging an end to gang‑related violence in the Bronx.
