Bronze Age artifacts discovered in new Czech cave system

Archaeologists have confirmed human activity in a newly discovered cave near Hvozd, located in the Olomouc region near the Javořice Caves. Amateur cavers discovered fragments of a ceramic vessel and a bone awl dating back to the Late Bronze Age, approximately 3,000 years ago.

Patrik Urban, a curator at the Olomouc Museum, noted that while the tools may have originated from a disturbed grave, a cache, or ritual offerings, the primary focus has shifted to collecting samples for radiocarbon dating and paleobotanical analysis. The narrow dimensions of the cave's entrance present significant challenges for the archaeological team, limiting the number of researchers who can work in the space simultaneously.

The cave system, which was discovered in 2024 by David Stodola and subsequently named after him, consists of 315 meters of karst passages. It recently received an award from the Czech Speleological Society for its significance.
