Bronze Age settlement discovered near Split, Croatia
Archaeologists conducting extensive protective research in Stobreč, a suburb of Split, have confirmed the existence of a prehistoric settlement dating back to approximately 1500 BC. While the area was long known as the site of ancient Epetium, recent excavations have revealed layers of history predating Greek and Roman presence.
Findings include remains of Bronze Age houses, ovens, and ancient graves. Research documented in a scientific paper by Marina Ugarković and Niko Romac describes various historical layers, including Hellenistic defensive walls, a tower, a Roman road, a drainage system, and late antique buildings. To date, researchers have documented over 100,000 fragments of objects and other movable finds from different periods.
