Bronze Relief Stolen from Anti‑Fascist Monument in Čabar, Croatia
Police in the Croatian town of Čabar discovered that a bronze relief weighing more than half a tonne was removed from the anti‑fascist monument commemorating World War II fighters. The artwork, created by noted sculptor Mile Grgas, is valued at €50‑100 000. Local officials said the theft appears motivated by the metal's monetary value rather than political intent.
Mayor Antonio Dražović announced that the municipality has notified metal‑recycling firms in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy to watch for attempts to sell the stolen bronze. He also mentioned that surveillance footage from nearby houses is being reviewed. Former parliamentarian Drago Vrus, president of the local anti‑fascist veterans’ association, suggested the perpetrators were likely outsiders who used a truck to transport the heavy piece. An investigation is ongoing, and authorities have appealed to the public for any information that could help locate the missing relief.
