Brookhaven Lab installs electron microscope with 200‑fold sharper energy resolution
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory has installed a custom‑built scanning transmission electron microscope at its Center for Functional Nanomaterials. The instrument delivers energy resolution about 200 times sharper than existing microscopes, allowing scientists to examine a material’s atomic structure, chemical composition and electronic behavior simultaneously.
Key technical advances include a pair of secondary‑electron detectors that image both the top and bottom surfaces of a sample at atomic precision, momentum‑resolved electron energy‑loss spectroscopy for unprecedented energy filtering, operation at low voltages (as low as 20 keV) to minimise damage to delicate samples, and an extended measurable energy range. Researchers say the capability will accelerate catalyst studies and the development of better batteries, fuel cells, semiconductors and quantum‑material devices.
Scientists involved in the project highlighted the breakthrough: Sooyeon Hwang (associate professor, Dongguk University) noted the instrument bridges a long‑standing gap between electron microscopy and synchrotron X‑ray facilities; Yimei Zhu, senior physicist at Brookhaven, said it pushes the limits of current instrumentation; and Judith Yang, leader of the electron microscopy group, emphasized its value for observing catalyst surface changes before and after reactions.
